3 Natural Ways to Reduce Estrogen for Uterine Fibroids and Cysts

I learned something surprising about estrogen recently: It’s something that can be removed from your body through the body’s natural functions.

If you’re like me, this was a surprise because when I thought of estrogen, I pictured this ephemeral hormone substance that couldn’t be captured, moved around, or witnessed. That someone with estrogen dominance, which may be causing womb illness like uterine fibroids or cysts, can potentially remove that extra estrogen from the body is amazing. (Our bodies are really always working toward health. Sometimes, all we have to do is get out of the way, or give her a little nudge toward balance.)

According to the va.gov website, “Many conditions are thought to be associated with or exacerbated by estrogen dominance, including breast and uterine cancers, fibroids, endometriosis, and polycystic ovarian syndrome.” Therefore, maintaining a proper balance of estrogen and progesterone, the sex/reproductive hormones for women, is very important for keeping your womb healthy.

Here are some ways to reduce estrogen and restore hormonal balance and health:

1. Support your liver.

Estrogen is first metabolized in the liver and kidneys, and then flushed through urine and poop. So making sure these organs are supported is important. Consider making a tea or taking herbal supplements that support liver function, such as burdock root, goji berries, milk thistle, and dandelion root.

2. Eat healthy estrogen-supporting foods.

The second surprising thing I learned is that estrogen can turn into different types of metabolic forms—some better than others for your body and health. Which means you’ll want to eat foods that promote the healthier form of estrogen waste.

Long story short: Estrogen is broken down into two main “metabolites,” one of which blocks “stronger estrogens that promote cell proliferation and possible cancer growth” — this is the one we want. The other estrogen waste increases cell proliferation and is associated with inflammation — we want to stay away from this one.

In order to promote the healthier estrogen pathway, it’s recommended to eat these foods: flaxseed, omega-3 fatty acids, and green tea.

3. Eat a plant-based diet.

The goal here is to take care of your colon. Because after that estrogen is processed by the liver and broken down into the (hopefully) good stuff, it will need to be excreted through your poop so it can leave your body for good. If your colon is not moving regularly, then estrogen gets stuck in the body and reabsorbed, contributing to estrogen dominance.

Eating a plant-based diet is the best way (to me) of ensuring you’re getting enough fiber to clean that colon out. Even better, if you’ve never done a juice cleanse in order to give your colon a break and a reset of sorts, now is the time! Learn more about doing a juice cleanse for womb health here.
