The Magic Medicine of Sunbathing Your Vagina for 10 Minutes a Day

Peace, sunflowers! It’s time to correct and redirect our relationship with the sun!

It’s time to dispel this myth that the sun is something we should be hiding from and “protecting” our skin from. Whether it’s fear of being sunburnt, getting cancer or “getting too dark,” as Black women our relationship with the sun has been turned upside-down so that we are shunning the very thing that gives us life, nourishment and energy.

I used to be someone who would put on chemical-filled sunblock every hour while at the beach — but I would still come home sunburnt sometimes. What I didn’t know at the time was that the sun was trying to detox the Standard American Diet from my body AND the harmful chemical ingredients of the sunblock from my skin — causing my skin to be irritated and “sunburnt.”

Once I started fasting out the decades of damage to my colon and body, and switched over to a whole food plant-based diet, I was shocked to learn I was able to sustain long periods of time in the sun with nothing at all or just a homemade shea butter and herbal mixture to nourish my skin while the sun’s rays shone on me.

We need to get the sun’s rays on our skin daily, on our scalp, on the soles of our feet and the palms of our hands, and, yes, even on our vagina!

Have you ever heard of someone refer to themselves as a light body? That’s because we are made of both visible and non-visible light, like everything else in the universe. This is why you have an “aura” that can be photographed. The sun’s rays, traveling all the way from the cosmos, are a combination of the visible light we can see and ultraviolet light that we can’t see — but all of it contains cosmic energy that nourishes us. Sunlight is one of the best natural medicines! And the fact that the melanin in our skin can absorb the energy from the sun, giving us that sun-kissed color, is something to be proud of!

Just like a plant’s chlorophyll converts sunlight energy into life energy through the process of photosynthesis, we, as humans, also convert sunlight into energy that fuels us, provides us with vital nutrients and helps our body function properly, heal dis-ease and repair cells. “The rays [of the sun] are absorbed into the skin of all life forms,” says Darius Clay in his book Melanin Is the Name, but Copper Is the Source of All Pigmentation and Life. “That light energy is changed into chemical energy that can be used as fuel for the organism in the human body. This chemical energy has an effect on the mind, as well. … The human mind is made of electrical chemical impulses.” (This is why I like to repeat positive affirmations in the sun!)

Many women in this society are suffering from Womb issues, and the sun is a powerful healing tool that should be part of their wellness program. In addition to eating a plant-based diet, incorporating periods of fasting, and nourishing the body with herbs and wild edibles, women should allow the sun’s rays to touch and heal your skin, the outside of your Womb (the lower abdomen), and your vulva (the outside part of your genitals, including your labia, clitoris, and vaginal opening) with its cosmic energy. When done together, this will help solve for many issues, including increasing sex drive, increasing fertility, and restoring balance from dis-eases like PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, etc.

In Sacred Woman, Queen Afua breaks down how important it is to let your scalp and hair receive the sun’s light. The same principles should be applied to your vagina and vulva, other areas of your body that don’t often receive love from the natural elements. “You need the sun’s rays to bathe your scalp (your crown) because your hair is a living organism,” she writes. “It needs sun, air, and water to stay alive. The sun’s rays feed your brain cells and open up your spiritual gateways. … Let your hair breathe. Let it inhale and exhale.”

You know how good it feels when your skin is warmed by the sun? Now imagine that warmth on your vulva, which normally is always covered by unbreathable denim or spandex and never gets any cosmic light. It is a radiant experience!

So find a safe and private place in your house where a lot of sun shines through the window — and where you’re not visible to anyone outside of the window — or if you have a private backyard or secluded land, set up outside. I’ll usually have a dress on and just lift up my dress and position my naked Yoni right in the sunlight, and I will meditate, gaze at the sky and speak positive affirmations to myself for 10 to 20 minutes. After one sunbathing session, you’ll feel how powerful the healing magic of the sun is and your Womb will thank you for it. Let your Yoni breathe!
